SugarCRM Customer Relationship Management Software Capabilities

Sugar offers CRM software in five progressively richer editions. Each CRM software product stems from the same code base, with the free Sugar Community Edition delivering about 80% of the core functionality contained in the fee-based products. All editions include the core CRM suite of sales force automation (SFA), marketing management and customer support.

Key components and capabilities of the SugarCRM software include:

  • Marketing Automation—including target list management, email marketing, lead management, multi-channel campaign management, web-to-lead forms, lead assignment and routing, and marketing reporting.

  • Sales Force Automation (SFA)—including account and contact management, task and activity tracking, opportunity management, quotes and contract management, Outlook integration, dashboards and reporting.

  • Customer Support—including case management, rules based routing of incidents with triggered escalations, knowledge-base (with FAQs, file sharing and rate content features), inbound email to case creation and assignment, self service customer portal and support reporting.

  • Sugar Platform—allows administrators and developers to build custom business processes, define teams, control access rights to modules and fields, change the home page layout, modify screens and pages with the layout editor, and create new dashlets using third-party data sources. The workflow tools can create and enforce business rules. The Module Builder allows the creation of custom fields within a module or the ability to create an entirely new module. New modules can be shared or sold on the Sugar Exchange and loaded into other Sugar instances with the Module Loader.

As cloud CRM matures and becomes increasingly competitive, every credible vendor delivers solid functionality in terms of account/contact/activity/opportunity management, pipelines and forecasts, campaigns and cases. The increasingly crowded market is sure to invoke pricing pressures. Because of its open source foundation, Sugar may be more resilient to the inevitable pricing squeezes that its commercial competitors.

SugarCRM's open source development model, with the immeasurable value it gives and receives from its community, permits it to deliver a competitive product at an attractive price point. Open source software products spread the costs, and the benefits, and are simply less costly that proprietary or commercial CRM, regardless of the deployment method.

Unlike Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Oracle CRM on Demand which also offer both on-demand and on-premises delivery options, SugarCRM is priced the same, regardless of deployment option. Also unlike popular SaaS competitors which come with a variety of add-on subscription fees for varying functions and charge additional for customer support, SugarCRM's subscription fees are inclusive of basic support, maintenance, as well as mobile CRM and complete access to integration toolkits.

And unlike most CRM competitors, software buyers have the option to first download the system and trial it in a production environment. There's no better way to reduce risk of choosing the wrong CRM system than using it before buying it.

Vertical Market Solutions

While the company does not publish industry-specific CRM software versions, business partners frequently adapt the CRM product pursuant to vertical market requirements. SugarCRM products have acquired large concentrations of customers in the following industries: Communications, Financial Services, Healthcare, Government/Public Sector, Professional Services, Manufacturing, Technology and Retail/Distribution.

Technology

The CRM software products originated on the LAMP stack of Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP, but is also available on other platforms that can deliver Apache, MySQL and PHP (such as Windows, Solaris and Mac OS X). SugarCRM can also use other databases such as Oracle.

SugarCRM supports both both on-demand and on-site deployments and the software can be easily moved from one to the other. SugarCRM's portability is extremely unique among Software as a Service (SaaS) CRM systems. SugarCRM is cloud ubiquitous so customers can choose to operate the application on clouds such as Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure, Sugar On-Demand or private clouds.

Open Source Licensing

SugarCRM originally licensed Sugar Open Source under the SugarCRM Public License (based on the Mozilla Public License and the Attribution Assurance License). While recipients could freely redistribute Sugar Open Source and the license allowed for the inspection and modification of the source code and for the creation of derived works, many critics expressed concern over SugarCRM's use of the phrase "commercial open source" to describe its software products. On July 25, 2007, SugarCRM announced the adoption of the GNU General Public License (version 3) for the Sugar Community Edition, the offering previously known as Sugar Open Source. This updated license took effect with the release of Sugar Community Edition 5.0. On April 11, 2010, SugarCRM announced that beginning with version 6.0, the Sugar Community Edition would be licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3. The charts module, customer portal, mobile support, some SOAP services and most of the default theme templates were removed from the AGPLv3 licensed Sugar Community Edition 6.
